How to crop image in Photoshop?

To crop an image, use the Crop Tool from the toolbox or use the shortcut “C”. When you click on the crop tool, crop borders are displayed on the edges of the image. You can pull the ends to increase or decrease the size and can also move the image around to position the crop selector. Else you can also draw a new cropping area by yourself.

You can also specify crop options through the Crop Menu bar at the top of the documents. It consists of the Aspect Ratio of the selector, the overlay options and the straighten option and the content aware option. You can choose a preset for the aspect ratio or fill in your values. Overlay options are the guides while cropping. You can choose between the Golden Ratio, Grid, and Triangle among others. The shortcut to go through the options is “O”.

Content Aware Fill is used when you use the Crop tool for straightening or rotating an image and/or expanding your canvas beyond the picture’s original size. When this is done, Photoshop automatically fills in the gaps to match the surroundings. To do so, just click on the content aware fill option in the crop menu before cropping or straightening the image. After cropping, when you click enter to crop the image, Photoshop will fill in the gaps.

You can also use the Perspective Crop tool to transform the perspective in the image. This tool is helpful when the image is taken from an angle and not straight on and you want to straighten the image. There is a distortion in the image, for example, if the image is taken from the top of a building, then the top edges of the building look closer to each other than they should and this type of distortion is known as keystone distortion. To use this tool, all you have to do is draw the endpoints of your crop selector so that the distortion is removed. When you press enter, the image is stretched or compressed to adjust the distortion.

What do you mean by the Clone tool? How is it used?

The Clone tool or the Clone Stamp tool is used in digital image editing to replace information from one part of a picture with information from another part. It is effective when you want to remove objects or details from an image but don’t want to destroy the image so you use the details of some other part of the image to cover these objects or details. If you want to keep the retouching of the image separate from the original image, you can do the retouching in a separate empty layer.

To use this tool, select it from the toolbar, it looks somewhat like a chess piece. You can also use the shortcut “S”. First you’ll have to define the sample area by pressing and holding the “Alt” key and clicking on the area that you want to copy. Then brush over the area where you want to add the copied detail to cover an object. While you are working, a plus sign following the cursor indicates where the detail is being copied from.

If you wish to work on a new layer for retouching, then create a new layer in the Layers Panel and with the layer selected, select the Lock Position option (Looks like a four-pointed arrow) from the menu. This will ensure that the position of the layer will not change with respect to the image layer and will be aligned. From the Options bar of the Clone Stamp tool (found at the top of the document), set the Sample menu to “Current & Below”. Using this, you will be able to copy details from the underlying layer and place them on the new layer.

How do you create a transparent background in Photoshop?

Transparent background means that besides the actual object, nothing else will be visible in the background. A transparent background gives you the ability to place your saved image against any background without the image obstructing the background. Any logo should always be created with transparent backgrounds so that it can be placed anywhere, regardless of the background color or design.

To create a transparent background, while creating a new document, you get a pop-box which asks for the preset details. Here at the end of all the options and just above the “Advanced options”, you get a box which reads “Background Contents”. Here you can choose transparent instead of white (which is the default setting). If your advanced options tab is not open then the transparent option will not be visible. This will create a document with a transparent background.

If you have already created a new document and want to change the background to transparent then that can also be done. Make sure the “Layers Panel” is open. You can see it on the right side of the window screen. If not then you can open it using the “Windows” tab in the Menu bar and select “Layers” from the drop down menu. Or you can use the shortcut F7.

The background layer by default is locked. To unlock it either click on the small lock icon in front of the background layer in the layer panel or you can also double click on the layer itself. This will open up a pop-up, just click Ok and the background layer is changed to Layer 0. Now you can add a new layer (Layer 1) which by default would be a transparent layer and delete Layer 0. Now you have a Transparent Background.

How do you resize an image in Photoshop?

Resizing an image means to change the dimensions (width, height, resolution) of the image.

To resize an image, click on the Image Tab in the Menu Bar. Go to “Image Size” and click on it. You can also use the shortcut Alt+Ctrl+I. A pop-box will open up with multiple options (width, height, resolution etc.) The “dimensions” at the top of the box tells the size of the original image. The leftmost block gives a preview of the image after resizing.

You can change the width and height parameters and also the measurement unit according to your convenience. To ensure that the proportions of the image are not changed which can result to a stretched out image, make sure the icon (which somewhat looks like an infinity sign) next to the width and height boxes is turned on. If lines are coming out of it and the background behind it is of a darker shade that means that the constraint proportions option is on.

If you do not want to change your original image, make sure to use the “SAVE AS” option to save the file.
